Part 1: Buck works with the rider to use less pressure on the approach and in between fences. He focuses on a soft hand and a soft arm, and following the horse with the body, so as not to go against them in the air. The rider jumps select jumps from the cross country course, and works to apply these principles. Buck notes that the rider has a tendency to fall back and grab the reins, which is causing the horse to hollow. They work on this by sitting in the saddle more on the approach to fences, and having a lighter rein that stays soft when the horse jumps.
