Steffen Peters works with a rider and her accomplished and forward-thinking mare who have been competing Grand Prix level for a few years. The rider works on lengthening the horse's neck at the trot, which results in the mare getting a little ahead of the rider. Steffen advises the rider to maintain the forward energy but use half-halts to prevent the horse from running away or come back into a rounder frame for a few steps. The pair try opening the frame while leg-yielding and maintaining steadiness. As they progress to canter and half-pass, Steffen stresses the importance of maintaining a ground-covering stride. The rider works to collect the mare then lengthen out her neck and incorporates some canter pirouettes. Steffen coaches the rider to test each movement, rather than ride it, so she knows how light of an aid she can count on to get a good result in the show arena. They test the piaffe, make some small corrections and praise the mare for her efforts before moving on to tempis. Steffen concludes the session with a focus on staying centered and coming back to neutral before a movement falls apart. They school moving from piaffe to passage with half steps.
