After the horses warm up, the first exercise is cantering rails on the ground, making sure the horses have the proper canter on approach. The retired eventing gelding uses 7 feet between the rails, and trainer Ashley Johnson tightens the distance up to 6 feet for the more nervous chestnut Thoroughbred mare.
