When they first ask for collection in the canter the mare breaks to the trot and Steffen explains how this can be a training opportunity to clarify the aids for collection versus a down transition. Steffen has her stop and ride a walk pirouette to reinforce the response to her outside leg when the mares haunches fall out in a transition to collected canter. He explains how important it is to have a simple walk canter transition and how that will relate to the flying change. He helps her tactfully work through some resistance and next ride haunches in on the circle to a schooling walk pirouette. He describes how he used the movements to further their training without arguing with them, and how having a good understanding of the leg yield, shoulder fore and canter pirouette will up your success with flying changes.
