You can use the pads with a rider up. It allows for feedback on the horse by the rider before and after using the pads. The idea is to try to get an idea of how the pads might help her. In this situation, the rider felt that the hind legs were easier to engage after stacking the pads behind, and she felt freer and moved a little higher through her shoulder after stacking them in front.
